During IPL
(Intense Pulsed Light) vascular treatment, the IPL wavelength is
optimized so that the energy is absorbed only by the targeted blood
vessels, delivering sufficient energy to thermocoagulate the entire
vessel without causing damage to the surrounding skin. After
treatment, the body absorbs the damaged vessels. Little or no trace
of the initial lesion remains.
If you have been trying to cover spider veins with
camouflage makeup or hide them with pants, stockings, or long
skirts, a new laser treatment may help. The Dr. Al Rustom's Medical & Day Care Surgery Centre's new IPL/SR is an advanced laser powerful
enough to remove face veins and some spider veins. The IPL/SR
utilizes a wavelength of light that penetrates deep into the dermis.
Tiny but powerful packets of light energy zoom in to coagulate blood
vessels, eradicating unsightly spider veins.
Unsightly veins on the legs are a problem for many
people, mostly women. They develop often in early adult life, become
severe during pregnancy and never completely resolve. Because of
their appearance the sufferer wears slacks or long dresses to hide
the legs and will never go to the beach or be seen in public (or
even by her family) in a swimming costume or shorts.
Unsightly veins on the surface of the leg of any
size are caused by an abnormal connection between the high-pressure
veins deep in the legs with the low pressure, low flow veins under
and in the skin. This abnormally high pressure causes the surface
veins to dilate and become visible.
The most common problem is spider veins or broken
capillaries known medically as telangiectasias. These small red or
blue vessels are also caused by a high pressure connection, usually
from pale blue/green veins which appear to be deep under the skin.
To successfully treat spider veins it is important that the
blue/green veins (called reticular veins) are also treated.
The technique used to treat virtually all abnormal
vessels on the legs is laser treatment and/or sclerotherapy.
Using those techniques, vessels can be treated without hospital
admission or surgery. There are no scars. It may take several
sessions to treat the veins starting with large veins first and
gradually working down to the small "spider" veins. An elastic
stocking is worn for one to two weeks after the treatment.
