Psoriasis is a persistent skin disease that takes
its name from the Greek word for "itch." The skin becomes inflamed,
producing red, thickened areas with silvery scales; most often on
the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back. In some cases,
psoriasis is so mild that people don't know they have it. At the
opposite extreme, severe psoriasis may cover large areas of the
body.
Psoriasis cannot be passed from one person to another,
though it is more likely to occur in people whose family members
have it. In the United Kingdom approximately 2% of the population
have psoriasis.
Dr. Al Rustom's Skin and Laser Clinic is the first centre in the
UAE to provide B-Clear® for Psoriasis.
The Targeted PhotoClearing System that provides a
new, unique therapy for the treatment of psoriasis. Combining the
proven benefits of UVB therapy with the latest advances in targeted
light technology, the BClear® laser creates a treatment option for
patients who previously have not received satisfactory
results.
The innovative technology of the BClear® laser
represents a significant breakthrough in that it takes existing
science to the next level by combining the benefits of highly
efficacious UVB light therapy with the latest advances in
fibre-optic delivered light technology.
The computerised
BClear® laser delivers precisely targeted light through a
fibre-optic cable, in significantly higher doses than those used in
traditional UVB light therapy. This allows patients to experience
successful results in fewer treatment sessions, with little or no
associated side effects.
Patients with mild to severe
psoriasis who have areas of stubborn disease, and those with lesions
in the body's skin folds, will greatly benefit from the BClear®
laser because it offers a time saving, safe and effective treatment
option. At Dr. Al Rustom's Skin and Laser Clinic, doctors
using the BClear® laser can safely and effectively treat psoriasis
with fewer treatments than required by conventional UVB. With the
BClear® laser, it is possible to reduce psoriasis with as little as
8 treatments.
Petroleum jelly is sometimes applied to the
affected area prior to treatment; this enhances the transmission of
UVB light through the skin. This also provides patient comfort
during treatment, as the treatment head glides more easily over the
psoriatic lesions. Treatment is administered two or three times a
week, usually over a two month period. The number of treatments and
frequency of treatment will vary between patients, due to the extent
of the condition and area being treated. This will be decided during
your free consultation with a treatment doctor.
Post Treatment Care
Following treatment slight reddening of the treated
area may occur in a small number of cases. Clients should protect
the treated area against excessive sun exposure for up to one month
after treatment.
A vitamin D analogue called Dovonex
(Calcipotriol) may be prescribed to complement your BClear®
treatment. Dovonex is available as a scalp solution and as both
cream and ointment formulations.
